Case Study

Bangweulu Scaling Solar IPP (Zambia) [2017]

Trinity advised the project company in relation to Zambia’s first large-scale solar power plant, the 54MW Bangweulu solar IPP developed, tendered, awarded and financed under the World Bank Group’s Scaling Solar programme. 

The project was sponsored by Neoen SAS, First Solar Inc. and Zambia’s Industrial Development Corporation, with financing provided by International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC).  The project also benefitted from a partial risk guarantee from the International Development Agency (IDA).

The project was particularly notable for the tariff it achieved (6.02USc/kWh), which was the lowest solar tariff in sub-Saharan Africa at the time and will remain fixed for 25 years.  The project will supply electricity to more than 27,000 homes in Zambia.


Telecoms (Zambia):
Advising Standard Bank of South Africa Limited and Stanbic Bank Zambia with regard to the financing of a loan facility to MTN (Zambia) Limited.


Toll Roads Bid (Zambia):
Advising an international consortium bidding for the development of several toll roads in Zambia.


Transmission Line Project (Zambia):
Representing the Copperbelt Energy Corporation, a joint venture between Cinergy Global Power and the National Grid, in relation to the development a 220kv transmission line project in the North Western Province of Zambia (and a long-term power supply agreement to the Kansanshi Mining Project.)
