Mining and natural resources

Mining and natural resources transactions in emerging markets represent a key aspect of the experience of the Trinity team members.

The team is based in London, Johannesburg and Perth and comprises senior lawyers from large international UK and US law firms specialising almost entirely on sub-Saharan Africa and other emerging markets.  Trinity is recognised by Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500 and has advised on various award-winning transactions.  The 2011 edition of Chambers Global ranks Trinity International for “Projects & Energy: Africa” alongside some of the largest and best firms in the market.

The firm’s ability to service clients in London, Johannesburg and Perth reflects the significant connection between projects, transactions, expertise and debt and equity markets in Australia, London and Africa, particularly in the resources sector; there are, for example, approximately 250 Australian companies currently undertaking over 650 projects in Africa.  Trinity works closely with Hunt & Humphry, a specialist project law firm based in Perth, Australia, widely recognised for its niche focus on resources, infrastructure and energy.  The firm is rated in various legal guides including Legal ProfilesChambers and Doyle’s and is the only niche firm ranked “Premier” (the top classification) in both resources and native title and is one of very few non-national firms in Australia receiving that ranking in any category.

Members of the Trinity mining team have advised on greenfield mining developments and related equity and debt financings together with large acquisitions and disposals of substantive mining operations. We have had experience in coal, zinc, gold, copper developments and are familiar with the industry documentation involved in undertaking such developments and their financing.

Relevant transactions of members of the Trinity team across all practice areas in the resources sector include:

  • Iron ore development (Sierra Leone): acting for African Minerals in relation to its iron operations
  • Acquisition (South Africa): Advising ASX listed corporate in relation to a coal mine acquisition
  • Bauxite mine investment (Guinea): advising investors in relation to their investment
  • Listing (South Africa): advising large diamond producer on its inward-listing on the JSE
  • Restructure (Tanzania/Mozambique): restructure of exploration projects
